Rugs are versatile little things. They can be humungous or teeny weeny, rectangle or ladybird shaped, complement or contrast and lighten or darken a room – the choice is yours. But with so many options, you might need a helping hand. That’s why we’ve put together a few handy pointers…
A lot depends on the room you’re buying a rug for. For playrooms and kitchens you’ll need something slightly more robust and easy to clean, for bedrooms you’ll want something soft and comforting to wriggle your toes into, and for offices you’ll want something that wheeled chairs can easily glide over (oh so satisfying).
The size of a rug can make a huge difference to the space it’s in. If you’re trying to make a space appear bigger, an overly large rug can end up having the opposite effect. If you’re trying to differentiate areas in an open-plan space, two different (but not jarring) rugs can look great – offering some contrast between living spaces.
Before picking out a pattern or colour, take a look at the room first, considering what will work well within it. If you already have lots of things going on, then a simpler pattern or block colour rug will sit perfectly. On the other hand, if you’ve got a simplistic décor, then a boldly patterned rug could be the cherry on the cake.
Bear in mind that a rug with a bold colour is likely to become the star of the show, so it’s worth considering all of the other elements in a room before deciding. Bright colours can add warmth and energy to a room, whilst pale, neutral tones can create a lovely, calming environment.
